Webinar: COVID-19 and security risks in Africa

November 19, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm UTC-5

Around the world, there has been an alarming increase in violence against Indigenous leaders and activists during the pandemic. Indigenous Peoples are especially vulnerable to Covid-19 as they experience poor access to health care, significantly higher rates of diseases and lack of access to key preventive measures.

The Working Group on the Rights of Indigenous Populations/Communities in Africa, a Special Mechanism of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, has expressed their concerns regarding the vulnerability of Indigenous Peoples in Africa due to their precarious living conditions. Governments and land grabbers are taking advantage of the situation and several Indigenous communities throughout the continent have faced evictions from their ancestral homelands and violence.

On Thursday, November 19th, join Land is Life for a conversation with key Indigenous leaders and activists from all over Africa about the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the increase of security risks for Indigenous Peoples and activists.

  • Milka Chepkorir, Sengwer Community Leader, Kenya
  • Thomas Nkuna, Indigenous fisher community leader from Kwanibela, South Africa
  • Jemimah Kerenge, Maasai Human Rights defender, Land is Life´s Indigenous-led Grantmaking Program Director, Kenya
  • Robert Agenonga, environmental activist, Human Rights Defender and researcher, Uganda
