A healthy environment is critical to public health, ecosystem vitality, and the sustainability of societies. A majority of countries have endorsed this view and adopted environmental laws or included the right to a healthy environment in their constitutions. However, practice often lags behind the adoption of environmental laws, and to date, there has been very little data to help understand and address this gap.

The Environmental Governance Indicators for Latin America and the Caribbean (EGI) represents the first-ever effort to address this challenge by measuring how environmental governance functions in practice across 10 countries in the region. This study is the result of a collaborative research effort undertaken by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the World Justice Project (WJP).

The two organizations invite you to join us for the launch of the report, which will include a presentation of the main highlights of the report, followed by an analysis of its implications for the region and the world in terms of improving environmental governance.

Un medio ambiente sano es crítico para la salud pública, la vitalidad de los ecosistemas y la sostenibilidad de las sociedades. La mayoría de los países apoyan esta visión y han adoptado un marco legislativo en materia ambiental o incorporado en sus constituciones el derecho a un medio ambiente sano.

Sin embargo, a menudo la práctica queda rezagada con respecto a las leyes ambientales y hasta la fecha existen muy pocos datos para ayudar a comprender y abordar esta brecha. Los Indicadores de Gobernanza Ambiental para América Latina y el Caribe (IGA) representan el primer esfuerzo realizado para abordar este desafío mediante la medición del funcionamiento de la gobernanza ambiental en la práctica en diez países de la región: Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Jamaica, Perú, República Dominicana y Uruguay. Este reporte resulta de la colaboración entre el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID) y el World Justice Project (WJP).

Las dos organizaciones le invitan a participar en un evento de lanzamiento del reporte, donde se dará una presentación de los principales hallazgos, y un análisis de las implicaciones de estos datos para la región y el resto del mundo en términos de gobernanza ambiental.

El evento estará presentado en español, con traducción simultánea al inglés.
