Strengthening support for environmental and climate defenders: New reports present recommendations to donors and civil society organisations

25.05.22

The Alliance for Land, Indigenous and Environmental Defenders (ALLIED) and the Universal Rights Group, with support from Freedom House and the Lifeline Fund for Embattled Civil Society Organisations, published two complementary reports presenting specific recommendations to donors and international civil society organisations on how to increase support for environmental defenders and climate activists.

The two reports, ‘
Supporting environmental human rights defenders’ and Understanding and responding to the protection needs of climate activists and movements,’ outline practical recommendations for donors and international civil society organisations to incorporate into their strategies toward the protection and prevention of harm of indigenous, environmental and land defenders.

The reports and other relevant related resources, can be found below:

The joint briefer summarises the reports’ key findings and recommendations.

The report ‘Supporting environmental human rights defenders’ contains key findings of a two-year project developed by ALLIED in order to inform concrete steps to increase the impact of existing and future strategies to enhance EHRD protection.

The report ‘Understanding and responding to the protection needs of climate activists and movements’ identifies concrete ways in which civil society organisations and donors who are dedicated to supporting human rights defenders, including those specifically oriented toward environmental human rights defenders, can more effectively connect, communicate, and provide support to address the particular needs of climate activists and movements.

This document presents concrete steps that donors and international civil society organisations can take to strengthen support for climate activists.
