Brörán peoples of Térraba and the Bribri peoples of Salitre

‘More than half a decade ago, on 30 April 2015, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) granted precautionary measures (MC 321-12) in favour of the Brörán peoples of Térraba and the Bribri peoples of Salitre. This exceptional measure, the only one of its kind in Costa Rica, was granted in response to the serious danger that the indigenous communities found themselves in, and the total lack of protection by the state authorities.’ (…)

Standing Rock Sioux Tribe

‘The lands of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe were reduced to a reservation by the Act of March 2, 1889. The Tribal government maintains jurisdiction on all reservation lands, including all rights-of-way, waterways, watercourses and streams running through any part of the reservation and to such others lands as may hereafter be added to the reservation under the law of the United States.’ (…)

Indigenous Kinipan land rights defenders

Kinipan is a small village in Borneo with a population of just under 1,000. In April 2018, the village applied for the recognition of its traditional rights over its forest (hutan adat). The villagers were involved hands-on in charting their land. The people make their livelihoods in rice, rubber, rattan and the fruits of the forest. (…)

#DefenderSinMiedo: historias de lucha por la defensa del ambiente en tiempos de pandemia

La serie periodística #DefenderSinMiedo retrata quince realidades de personas activistas y cuidadoras ambientales en América Latina. Mujeres y hombres, en compañía de sus comunidades, comparten los efectos de la pandemia por la covid-19 y sus esfuerzos por la preservación de sus territorios biodiversos.

En medio de la crisis global de salud por la covid-19, y mientras el mundo se adapta a prolongadas restricciones de movilidad y cuarentenas, en todo el territorio latinoamericano hay quienes siguen en la defensa de su tierra. Y lo hacen porque los proyectos extractivistas y la violencia contra las comunidades no se detienen.

#DefenderSinMiedo es un proyecto de periodismo de investigación liderado por el medio independiente Agenda Propia en coordinación con veinte editores, periodistas, diseñadores, traductores y medios aliados de México, Perú, Colombia, Honduras, Panamá, Venezuela, Brasil, Ecuador, Paraguay, El Salvador, Argentina y Estados Unidos. La serie se realizó con el apoyo de la ONG global Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA).

Zapotecas Indigenous Joint Communities

At the south of Mexico in ‘Sierra Norte’, Oaxaca, eight Zapoteca communities come together to a joint community organization working on the conservation of 13,000 hectares of forest. Their conservation strategy is based on a sustainable management of the forest, but also the development of a managerial model through which they have developed community businesses combining technical knowledge with indigenous organization.
